The capital of the canton of Valais, Sion sits at the bottom of the Rhône valley, overlooked by two landmark hills: the Valère basilica, home to the oldest playable organ in the world, and the ruins of Tourbillon castle, which offer a sweeping view over the whole plain. This perched old town contrasts with the newer districts that have developed below, towards the farmland and business areas.
A rail and road hub for all of Valais
Sion’s CFF station sits on the Simplon line, with direct connections to Lausanne, Geneva and, through the tunnel, Italy. The A9 motorway runs through the town and eases travel across the canton. The local bus network fills the gaps, a welcome addition in a valley where a car is often still needed to reach the surrounding villages.
Sunshine and vineyards that shape everyday life
Sion enjoys one of the driest and sunniest climates in Switzerland, a claim the whole region takes pride in. The hillside vineyards climbing towards the surrounding villages ring the town, between vine terraces and hiking trails accessible right from the centre.
Housing split between old town and valley floor
Sion’s housing stock contrasts older buildings in the historic centre, often full of character, with newer construction on the valley floor, where flats in owner-occupied schemes and detached houses dominate. This variety allows for very different searches depending on needs and budget; price benchmarks by neighbourhood are gathered on our price-per-square-metre page.
LCR Immo, based in Nyon, is active across French-speaking Switzerland and the French border area: we follow the Sion market for our buyers, sellers and tenants, with the same rigorous selection we use in Nyon.
